Texas Hold'Em

By now every single person on the planet has heard of Texas Hold’em. It is played all around the world from college dorm rooms to the highlight of the World Series of Poker tournament. Texas Hold’em is by far the most popular version of poker played today. If by some chance you have never heard of Texas Hold’em (doubtful) or at least do not know the rules of the well liked game, you have come to the right place. What you will find below is a detailed instruction on how to play Texas Hold’em.

Here is a quick rundown on the words, names and phrases you might hear during a game of Texas Hold’em.

·        Hole Cards – The cards that are dealt face down. They are for the eyes of the player only.

·        Community Cards – The cards that are dealt face up. They are for everyone to use.

·        Showdown – The end of the game where all the players show their hand and the winner is decided.

·        Betting Round – The part of the game where players wager on the hands they are given.

·        Face Cards – Literally any card that has a face on it: Jacks, queens and kings. Oh and aces count too.

·        Suit – Clubs, Spades, Hearts and Diamonds. There are four suits in the game.

·        Raise – Placing a higher bet into the pot.

·        Check – This means you are staying in the game without raising the bet.

·        Call – You are effectively ending the betting round and staying in the game.

·        Fold – You are bowing out of the game.

·        Hand – The card combination you are playing with.

·        Pot – The place where you place your bets. The reward for winning.

Once you have acquired yourself a seat at a Texas Hold’em game you will be dealt two hole cards. Every other player will also be dealt two hole cards. This next part is important your hole cards are for your eyes only. Do not under any circumstances let anyone see these cards. After you have checked your cards, the very first betting round will begin. Once every player has bet or folded, three community cards are dealt face up. Each player has the opportunity to use the community cards with his hole cards to settle on an amount to wager. Especially since the second betting round takes place immediately after the three community cards are dealt. After the second betting round is over a single community card will be dealt. Next a third betting round and then a final community card is laid down on the table. The point is to make sure you use three of the five community cards with your two hole cards to make a valid poker hand. The final betting round is also known as the showdown. This is the last chance any player has to win the pot. Depending on how you played this is where you will find out whether your strategy has worked or not.

There are slightly different versions of Texas Hold’em. One is called Royal Hold’em and the other is Double Board Hold’em. In Royal Hold’em the deck only contains tens, jacks, queens, kings and aces. Anything below a ten is discarded and not used. The poker strategy varies from other forms of poker since the odds of good hands are greatly increased. In the case of more than one player having the same hand, the winner is determined by the suit of their highest card.

In Double Board Hold’em two separate five card boards are dealt. The high hand using each of the two boards wins the pot. Basically, each player gets two hole cards, followed by a betting round. Then two separate rows of three community cards are dealt, followed by more betting. It goes like this until the two fifth and final community cards are dealt. A final round of betting incites a showdown where the winner must have the highest hand of both boards. It is very much like playing two games of regular Texas Hold’em at the same time.
