A recent increase in power shortages are causing the people in South Africa to buy back up power generators. It seems the instantaneous and surprising power outages are kicking people off the internet and out of online gambling rooms sometimes without a player’s winnings.

Eskom is the largest natural energy supplier of South Africa, Cape Town and Johannesburg both have seen a higher rate of blackouts. Eskom states that this critical situation will continue for at least another week. The cuts in power are due mostly to a turbine that failed to operate at the Koeburg nuclear power plant. The power plant has had to partially shutdown in order to fix the problem. Another reason for the loss of electricity is the unexpected demand for it. Eskom was ill prepared for the jump in demand and their consumers have suffered for it. Eskom has warned that they could be in the dark for as long as two hours a day thanks to load shedding.

The economy in South Africa is not in the best place it could be right now and Eskom is not helping. Accused of a lack of advance capacity planning and maintenance is finally taking its toll on the further development of the endangered economy. Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin stated that there would be an investigation into the causes but he is confident that South Africa as a group will not be thrust into darkness. Public Enterprises Minister Erwin went on to ask that people shut off their swimming pool pumps and air conditioning units when they are not being used.

Hopefully the population in South Africa will see an increase in energy soon. With all the back up power generators going just to exit an online poker room, the electricity problem does not seem to be getting better any time soon. A senior company executive for Eskom suggested that industrial investments will be minimized until 2013.
