Sweden Puts Its Foot Down

An open letter was published by Aftonbladet, the biggest newspaper in Scandinavia, which asked the laws of the European Union be enforced on Sweden. Sweden has been recently going against the rules and regulations of the European Union in reference to online gambling.

The open letter was written by past editor Anders Gerdin and current editor Jan Helin. In the letter they state that Sweden needs to be put back in their place for free movement of trade and services between European Union member nations involved with internet casinos. The letter was addressed to Charlie McCreevy the European Union compliance chief, and was asking for a strong and decisive measure regarding the Swedish blatant disregard for the rules. The letter also went on to say that companies like the Scandinavian newspaper, Aftonbladet, should not have to endure the brutal financial impact of having to throw out advertising by online casino companies in other European Union countries.

“It is high time to put an end to the Swedish Government's lack of respect for the European Union Treaty,” the editors wrote.
Anders Gerdin and Jan Helin also asked that the European Commission continue as soon as it possibly can with encroachment dealings against the Swedish government. They want to set up a prosecution of the European Court of Justice to make sure that sports betting and poker courses of action are dealt with correctly and quickly.

This all comes in the wake of so called indirect demands from the government for media outlets to put an end to receiving advertising from European Union competitors to the Swedish state’s gambling monopoly, Svenske Spel. Because Aftonbladet believes that agreeing on using competitive advertising from other European Union members should not be punishable under treaty based legislation, the Scandinavian newspaper is currently engrossed in three lawsuits.
